Cats meow more with men: study reveals the reason

According to ТСН: A new study may disappoint cat lovers, as it revealed that these fluffy creatures pay more attention to men.

Scientists found that when greeting their owners, cats meow significantly louder and more actively when they see a man rather than a woman. This may be due to the fact that men are generally less attentive and emotionally responsive to their pets, so cats have to 'amplify' their signals to attract their attention.

Study

The study was conducted by specialists from Ankara University (Turkey), who analyzed the behavior of 31 cats and their owners at home. People were tasked with attaching a camera to their chest and filming the first moments after returning home, trying to act naturally.

By analyzing hundreds of videos, scientists found that when greeting men, cats made an average of 4.3 sounds in the first 100 seconds, while with women — only 1.8.

Although women are usually more attentive to cats and use 'meow translations' and a 'baby' tone of communication, men provide clearer signals. This, according to researchers, forms in cats a habit of 'talking' more with men.

Forms of Cat Greetings

Scientists also studied various forms of cat greetings:

  • raised tail,

  • approaching the person and 'allorubbing' — when the cat rubs against the side or head, exchanging scents.

Interestingly, food motivation was not the main factor in the cat's behavior. The animals genuinely wanted to greet the person — with joy or relief that they had returned.

Scientists note that cats well adapt their communication style depending on who they interact with. So if your cat starts meowing actively when you come home, it's just trying to express its pleasure at your arrival.

Study of Cat Communication

Separate studies have also shown that:

  • people often cannot recognize a cat's stress or satisfaction;

  • even obvious signs of stress, people consider 'happy' behavior in 25% of cases;

  • cats have about 300 different facial expressions, of which more than a hundred are friendly.

Although cats are often considered aloof, scientists emphasize: they are excellent communicators, and the problem usually lies in the fact that people simply do not understand their signals.

Recall that earlier a veterinarian explained whether it is really safe to sleep in the same bed with pets. Many people invite their pets to bed, but co-sleeping may turn out to be less safe than it seems. It is important to know when this is permissible and when it is better to leave the animal on the floor.
