Melnyk at the UN: New missile attacks by Russia are a slap in the face to American mediators.
According to ТСН: In recent days, Russia has conducted mass attacks on Ukrainian cities, indicating the Kremlin's unwillingness to cease aggression and its disregard for international efforts to support a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Comments by Ukraine's representative to the UN
These conclusions were made by Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened due to recent Russian strikes.
Melnyk noted that a new wave of terror has engulfed numerous regions of Ukraine and serves as a conscious political signal from the Kremlin.
“This new horrific wave of terror, which engulfed many other cities in Ukraine at the beginning of last week”
He reminded of cities such as Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, and Odesa, emphasizing that it reflects Putin's intention to challenge American mediators and continue the barbaric war.
Escalation of the conflict
Melnyk pointed out the nighttime strike on January 9, carried out with the use of the “Oreshnik” missile, which signified a new level of escalation from Russia. He also noted that Moscow's attempts to explain this strike as an attack on Putin's residence are not new and have historical analogies.
“The insidious logic is identical. The aggressor state manufactures a pretext for a war that does not exist”
Melnyk stressed the need to clearly name things by their names, emphasizing that “this so-called attack on Putin's residence is an absolute lie”.
The illusion of Kremlin strength
He also noted that the Kremlin is trying to create an impression of its invincibility, despite the fact that the real situation in Russia is much worse.
“The Kremlin is used to puffing out its cheeks and demonstrating its power”
At the same time, Melnyk emphasized that all these actions only cover up the weakness of the Russian military machine, which will soon reach a critical point.
Call to action
In conclusion of his speeches, he urged the participants of the UN Security Council meeting to intensify support for Ukraine, especially in the area of air defense, as well as to increase pressure on the aggressor state.
It is also worth noting that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that the use of new “Oreshnik” missiles is an attempt by Moscow to undermine the resolve of allies.
These events confirm that Russia's aggression against Ukraine remains a serious threat to peace in the region. Support from international partners and response to aggression remain key factors in Ukraine's struggle for its territorial integrity and independence. The next steps in resolving the conflict will depend not only on internal factors but also on the response of the global community.
