95% of Ukrainian POWs were tortured in Russia
According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, over 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war were subjected to torture in Russia. At the same Time, the treatment of Russian POWs in Ukraine is entirely different, said Danielle Bell, the head of this monitoring mission.
She shared this information on the Dutch TV channel Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS).
"They are beaten with metal rods, severely electrocuted. They are humiliated. It's horrifying. This is the worst I have seen in 20 years of working with POWs at the UN. Torture is widespread and structural. 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war were tortured, and this is a crime against humanity," Bell stated.
According to Bell, representatives of the UN Monitoring Mission have full access to Russian POWs held in Ukraine. But in Russia, they cannot communicate with Ukrainian prisoners.
"The Ukrainian authorities give us unlimited access to camps and temporary prisons with prisoners of war," added Bell.
