Russia's Olympic Committee Gets Its Status Back

According to Espreso.tv: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reinstated the Russian Olympic Committee, lifting the suspension that had been in place since October 2023. This decision followed the removal of regional sports bodies from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories from the committee's membership. The suspension was officially lifted in early July 2023, allowing Russian athletes to return to international competitions.

According to available information, the Russian Olympic Committee had been suspended since October 2023. In response to this development, nine countries—including:

  • Estonia
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Romania
  • Sweden

—sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Sport expressing their concerns about the move. Meanwhile, during the Winter Olympics in Milan in February 2026, 13 Russian athletes competed as 'Individual Neutral Athletes.'

Restrictions Lifted and Athletes' Rights Restored

It is worth recalling that on July 7, 2023, the IOC temporarily removed restrictions on the Russian Olympic Committee. That same day, the International Volleyball Federation reinstated Russian athletes' eligibility in international volleyball. A few days later, on July 13, 2023, the International Table Tennis Federation also decided to restore Russian athletes' rights. By July 15, 2023, Russians and Belarusians were allowed to return to handball competitions.

Additionally, in May 2026, the IOC recommended lifting restrictions on Belarusian athletes. This reflects a gradual restoration of rights for athletes from countries that previously faced sports-related limitations. As a result, the return of the Russian Olympic Committee to the international stage has become a significant event in the sports world, drawing mixed reactions from various nations and sports federations.

The reinstatement of the Russian Olympic Committee signals shifts in the international sports landscape that could have far-reaching consequences for policy and relations between countries.

The concerns raised by the nine countries highlight ongoing tensions around security and ethics in sports. This situation also mirrors a broader trend of gradually normalizing sports ties with nations that faced sanctions amid political conflicts. It may lead to further reassessments of sports policies and attitudes toward athletes from countries that were previously restricted.
