Michelangelo Sketch Worth $2 Million: Inherited Drawing of a Leg Found

According to ТСН: Christie's auction house has announced the sale of a leg sketch attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti.

This drawing, measuring 12.7 cm, is done in red chalk, and its value is estimated at $1.5–2 million.

Jada Damen, a specialist in drawings of the old masters at Christie's, expressed the opinion that the sketch could be an authentic work by Michelangelo.

The owner of the sketch, a man from the US West Coast, received it from his grandmother. The painting was passed down in his family since the 1700s, but he had no idea he was dealing with a work of the great master.

The drawing features a characteristic brown signature from the 16th century, 'Michelangelo Buonarroti', which can be seen on many other works by the artist.

In addition, the Spanish police have sought out a painting by Pablo Picasso that went missing during transport in early October. The 1919 work 'Still Life with Guitar', insured for six million euros, was found in Madrid after a misunderstanding during unpacking at the CajaGranada museum in Granada, where it was planned to be delivered for a temporary exhibition 'Still Life: The Eternity of the Inert'.

This auction has generated significant interest among collectors and art historians, as if the sketch is indeed confirmed as an original by Michelangelo, it could become one of the most valuable artifacts of the Renaissance era to hit the market. The search for the Picasso painting, in turn, underscores ongoing issues of security in the transport of valuable artistic works.
