Neutral Switzerland invited to the EU's military mobility program.
The EU invites Switzerland to participate in the 'military mobility' project
The European Union has decided to invite neutral Switzerland to participate in the 'military mobility' project. This project will allow for the rapid movement of military units and equipment on Swiss territory.
'The EU Council has adopted a decision confirming that Switzerland's participation in the PESCO 'Military Mobility' project meets the general conditions set out in CFSP Decision 2020/1639 of 2020 and will add significant value to this project,' the EU Council stated.
According to the decision, the Netherlands, which coordinates the project, has been authorized to make an official invitation for Switzerland to join this project under PESCO. The invitation was sent in September 2024 after Switzerland expressed its desire to join.
After signing an administrative agreement with the EU, Switzerland will have the opportunity to join the 'military mobility' project.
This project simplifies and standardizes national border crossing procedures for military transport. Such streamlining of the movement of military personnel and equipment between EU countries includes roads, railways, maritime, and air transport.
In addition to Switzerland, Canada, Norway, and the United States were invited to participate in the project in 2021, while the United Kingdom was invited in 2022.
