Many dacha owners make the mistake of digging up potatoes too early, when the soil is still warm. This should not be done, as in warmth and moisture, the tubers start to steam, which leads to their spoilage.
In August, it is recommended to dig up only early varieties of potatoes, while late varieties are better harvested after September 15, when the soil cools down and the tubers ripen. Only in this case can the potatoes be well preserved without spoiling.
Before digging up the potatoes, it is necessary to properly prepare the garden. A couple of weeks before the harvest, remove all the potato tops from the garden to speed up the ripening of the tubers and reduce the risk of diseases. It should be noted that the above-ground part of the potato can be a source of infections, so it needs to be removed.
