Experienced gardeners recommend removing all branches that are unnecessary for the fruit tree. This refers to shoots that are not expected to yield fruit. This is important so that all nutrients that have been freed up go into the fruit buds that have already appeared on the apple tree.

Completely remove vertical shoots, especially those longer than 30 centimeters. The fact is that these shoots will no longer bear fruit and take away from the tree all the nourishment needed for future harvests.

Trim branches that grow almost horizontally to 30 centimeters on the outer bud. If there is a vertical shoot on the tree and next to it is a horizontal one with a formed bud, redirect to the horizontal one.

This way you will lead the branch to the side, expanding the crown of the apple tree and preserving nourishment in the tree.

What to Do with the Apple Tree Branches After Pruning

Do not throw away the apple tree branches after pruning, as they can be used as mulch. To do this, chop them up to improve soil structure and, at the same time, retain moisture. You can also send these branches to compost and then use them to fertilize plants in the garden or orchard.
