Actress Shani Wallace speaks out against remaking the classic 'Oliver!'

According to The Sun: Actress Shani Wallace criticized the plans to create a new version of the cult film 'Oliver!'. This became known from a publication in The Sun, which mentioned that theatrical mogul Sir Cameron Mackintosh is working on an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ 1838 novella.

Shani, who played Nancy in the original 1968 film, is confident that this film should be left alone.

”Of course, it should be left as is, as it is the best depiction of Dickens' novel. It is filled with boundless emotions. It is perfect in every aspect. How can they make it better? I could go on... But what’s the point? They’ll mess it up anyway.”

Despite Shani’s skepticism, her co-star in 'Oliver' Mark Lester supports the new project. He admits he does not want to see a 'woke' version and expressed his concerns about new interpretations of classic characters.

“I hope they don’t make a woke version, like Sky TV did in 'Twist', where Bill Sykes was played by a woman, because no one will watch that. Why are they even considering this?”

Mark, who played Oliver in the original film, shared his thoughts on new versions and urged fans of the original to stay open to changes:

“When Steven Spielberg announced a few years ago that he would remake 'West Side Story', I thought, ‘No way, how can they do it better?’ But in the end, I liked it. Why not give 'Oliver' a chance? If they can do it as well as Spielberg— it will be somewhat better than the original.”

According to The Sun, Sir Cameron Mackintosh is actively working on bringing the new project to life after the successful demonstration of the show this year in London's West End. A source reveals that Sir Cameron is very eager for the new version of 'Oliver' to finally materialize.

The original film received 11 Oscar nominations and won six, including 'Best Picture', 'Best Director', and 'Best Original Score'. It also won two Golden Globe Awards, including 'Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy' and 'Best Actor' for Ron Moody, who played Fagin.
