A New 'Best Casting' Category Arrives at the Oscars

According to Vox - Загальний: The Academy Awards have added a brand-new category: Best Casting. This marks the first new Oscar category introduced in 24 years. The move is designed to improve female representation in the film industry. Current data reveals that 82.2% of all Oscar winners have been men, while only 17.8% have been women. Furthermore, 67% of this year’s nominees are male, compared to just 33% female.

Women Take the Lead in Casting

This year, five contenders are nominated for the Best Casting award—and four of them are women. This highlights the growing influence of women in the casting profession. The International Casting Directors Association, founded in 1982, also underscores the importance of women in this field. According to Lana Veenker, approximately 75% of casting directors are women.

In 1996, the Academy rejected a proposal to create a separate branch for casting directors. However, in 2013, a casting branch was finally established. Destiny Lilly noted that

“the governors of this casting branch were truly the ones who played a decisive role in creating the Oscar.”
David Rubin, who has served as the Academy’s president since 2019, also helped lay the groundwork for this initiative.

In short, the introduction of the Best Casting category represents a significant step toward improving female representation in cinema and recognizing women’s contributions to the field.

This initiative could act as a catalyst for further change in the film industry, promoting greater gender balance not only in casting but also in other areas of film production. Acknowledging casting directors—especially women—may help break down industry stereotypes and encourage new talent. In turn, this could lead to more diverse and higher-quality content on screen. The addition of this category also emphasizes the need for a deeper analysis of women’s roles across all facets of filmmaking, which could positively shape the overall culture of the movie industry.
