Today in many cities of Ukraine you can see much more peppers than before. But unfortunately, not all of this pleasure is guaranteed, as the vegetable suffers from rot. Experienced gardeners explained why this happens and how to protect against this unpleasant phenomenon to harvest without extra problems.
Novyny.LIVE prepared useful tips for future gardeners.
Why does pepper suffer from rot
Fungi love moisture, warmth, and tight spaces where air does not circulate sufficiently, and apical rot occurs due to a calcium deficiency. Fungal infections, especially fusarium, are particularly harmful to the stems and roots, leading to the rotting of the entire plant.
Improper watering
If you water the peppers too often and abundantly, the threat of rot significantly increases. The thing is that constantly moist soil makes pepper bushes weak. At the same time, insufficient watering also harms the vegetable, as the plants' immunity drops due to water deficiency.
Deficiency of nutrients
When peppers lack calcium or potassium, they often develop apical rot. And if there is too much nitrogen in the plants, they weaken, creating a favorable environment for pathogens.
Bad weather
Constant rains, high humidity, or sharp temperature changes are all ideal conditions for rot growth. Particularly dangerous is prolonged wet weather when the leaves with fruits do not have time to dry.
How to save peppers from rot
If you notice signs of rot on the peppers, take the following measures:
- Remove damaged fruits, leaves, or stems using a sharp pruner, disinfect with alcohol beforehand, and then dispose of the remains
- Water the plants with fungicides 'Ridomil Gold' or 'Quadris' or the biofungicide 'Fitosporin' according to the instructions
- Reduce the number of waterings if the soil is too wet, and check the drainage well
- Trim the lower leaves to improve air circulation
