He was also known for his villainous roles. Stamp played General Zod in the 'Superman' films, the kidnapper Freddy Clegg in 'The Collector', and Sergeant Troy in 'Far from the Madding Crowd'.

Stamp was also offered to replace Sean Connery when he declined the role of James Bond, but his radical ideas about interpreting the character pushed producer Harry Saltzman away.
