Poland Grants Amnesty to Citizens Serving in Ukraine's Armed Forces.
Amnesty Law for Military Personnel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: The Polish Sejm has passed legislation granting a full amnesty to Polish citizens serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This law absolves criminal liability and overturns prior convictions for those who chose to support the Ukrainian military since the onset of the conflict, which began in April 2014. This move addresses a complex legal situation, as Poland, a key NATO ally, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
The vote saw participation from 430 deputies, with 407 voting in favor, 4 against, and 19 abstaining. The law covers individuals who served in a foreign army without prior authorization—an act previously punishable by imprisonment ranging from three months to five years. This decision represents a significant step toward legalizing the status of those who chose to defend Ukraine and ensuring they receive legal support.
Parliamentary Support and Political Context
Support for the bill came from deputies across multiple parties. Specifically, the 'Law and Justice' party provided 171 votes, the 'Civic Coalition' 151 votes, with additional support from deputies of the 'Polish People's Party' and 'Poland 2050'. The passage of this law underscores Poland's growing support for Ukrainian efforts to defend its territorial integrity and independence.
This legislation forms part of Poland's broader policy of supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. It also signals a shift in the official stance toward volunteers who choose to defend another country, altering their legal status. Such steps may strengthen cooperation between Poland and Ukraine and could enhance regional security, given the escalating military threats posed by Russia.
