US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the President of Panama and the Foreign Minister

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting with Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino and Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha to discuss important issues in the region and the world.

According to the US Department of State, Rubio reported to President Mulino and Minister Martinez-Acha that President Trump believes that the strong influence and control of the Chinese Communist Party over the Panama Canal area threatens his security and violates the Treaty of Neutrality and the exploitation of the canal.

'Secretary of State Rubio clearly stated that the current state of affairs is unacceptable, and if immediate changes are not made, the US will be forced to defend its rights under the Treaty,' the message states.

Rubio also emphasized the need for joint efforts to overcome the crisis of illegal migration in the region and thanked President Mulino for supporting a joint repatriation program that has significantly reduced illegal migration through the Darién Gap.

The Secretary of State highlighted the desire to improve the investment climate and ensure fair competition for American companies.

'Rubio expressed gratitude for the productive discussion and underscored the desire of the US to make both countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous. He noted that this meeting is an important step in restoring strategic relations between the United States and Panama in accordance with President Trump's vision,' the message states.
