Trump's Presidency, Negotiations with Russia, Ending the War, Mobilization: Zelensky Made a Number of Statements.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, named the conditions for negotiations with Russia, explained what he expects from the newly elected US leader Donald Trump, and clarified Russia's advances on the front.
As reported by 'Hvylya', he mentioned this in an interview with 'Ukrainian Radio'.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine must have a strong position in negotiations with Russia; otherwise, it will be a losing situation for our country.
'Provided that Ukraine is not alone with Russia, that Ukraine will be strong. What kind of negotiations can there be with a murderer? If we are talking directly with Putin, just with a murderer, we are in the conditions we are currently in, not reinforced with some important elements, this is an initially losing negotiation status for Ukraine. This is not about a fair peace. Definitely, in a weak situation, there is nothing to do in these negotiations', - he said.
Trump's Position
The president expects support for Ukraine from US President Donald Trump during negotiations with Russia regarding the war. According to him, the change in the US position depends on Trump's mood.
'Therefore, there are always challenges in mediation for me. Anyone can be a mediator, but one cannot abstractly say 'I am a mediator, so I cannot choose one side or the other'. No. In unconditional values and violations of international law, it cannot be like that', - he stated.
Zelensky emphasized that the USA should support Ukraine and recognize that Russia is the aggressor and violator of international law. He also believes that this should be one of the points to start negotiations.
'Trump's position is very important, the mood of America towards Ukraine is very important. They are on Ukraine's side today. This is important... Trump said that he supports Ukraine and wants to end the war, he is not saying: 'I will become president and let’s sit at the negotiating table'... America must maintain its position of supporting Ukraine in that Russia is the aggressor. This status must remain. Then we also have to think. This is one of the entry points that is very important at any negotiating platform. There should also be elements of our victory plan', - he clarified.
Negotiations with Russia
The president spoke about the problems with negotiations with Russia. He believes that Putin does not want peace in Ukraine but conducts talks with foreign leaders to lift his international isolation.
'I believe that Putin does not want peace at all, but that does not mean that he does not want to sit down with some leaders. Because for him, this would mean breaking political isolation. It is beneficial for him to sit, to talk, and not to agree. He cannot travel, and to talk means to travel somewhere, and hence he needs to unblock this. This is the breakdown of isolation... it is steps towards the de-isolation process regarding Putin as a politician... It is beneficial for him to agree on capitulation terms from our side, but he will not be given that', - he said.
Situation on the Front
The president explained the advances of Russia on the front. According to him, the reason for this is the slow staffing of Ukrainian brigades and delays in unit rotations.
'The situation in the east is indeed difficult. There is slow advancement of the Russians for various reasons. Our brigades are not receiving enough trained and prepared soldiers, and their armament process is also delayed', - he explained.
