According to ТСН: The Christmas Thief is one of the oldest symbols of Ukrainian Christmas. It embodies the connection between generations, prosperity, the memory of ancestors, and the earth's gratitude for the harvest.

The Thief has existed in Ukrainian traditions since pre-Christian times. The word comes from the term 'Díd', meaning ancestor, family. According to belief, on Christmas Eve, the souls of ancestors come into the homes to bless the family. For this purpose, homeowners placed a sheaf of grain in a place of honor.

After the introduction of Christianity, this tradition was organically adopted into Christmas customs. The Thief became a symbol of family prosperity, the protection of the house, and the remembrance of roots. It is brought into the house on the eve of Christmas and placed next to the icons.

What the Thief is Made Of

For the production of the Thief, ears of grain are usually taken. In Galicia, rye or wheat is often used, sometimes dried flowers and fragrant herbs are added. In Polissya, rye or oats are used. In Podillia, a mixture of wheat, rye, and barley forms the basis of the Thief, supplemented by branches of rowan, marigold, and mint.

In the southern regions, the Thief is made from wheat and steppe herbs and decorated with colorful ribbons. In the Carpathians, fir trees and dry mountain flowers are added to the grain, and small symbolic figures are often woven in.

The Placement of the Thief on Christmas Eve

Previously, the Thief had a special magical role. It was ceremoniously brought into the house by the homeowners while they spoke a blessing for a bountiful harvest. It was placed at the highest point, 'so that the bread grows'.

The Thief was not touched until the Holy Baptism, and afterward, it was either burned - 'to release the spirit of the ancestors', or kept until spring. It was not just a decorative element, but a sacred protection of the house.

The modern tradition was actively revived in the late 20th century. The Thief became a symbol of Ukrainian identity and a guardian spirit of Christmas.

The revival of the traditions of making and placing the Thief has become an essential part of Christmas celebrations in Ukraine. It is not only a way to preserve and demonstrate Ukrainian culture but also an opportunity to unite the family around shared values and memories of ancestors. Today, the Thief remains a symbol of family warmth and prosperity, honoring the connection to the past.
