The actor, known for his roles in 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and 'All the President's Men', died on Tuesday morning.
His last role involved him playing a prisoner in the third season of the police series 'Dark Winds'.
In this role, Redford plays chess with George R. R. Martin in a prison cell.
During an intense game, Redford invites Martin to make a move:
“George, the whole world is waiting. Make your move,”
his character says. Martin and Redford are being closely watched by a guard who admonishes them.
“Checkmate,”
Martin said, moving his red piece.
TRAGIC ESCAPE
“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home in Sundance, Utah - a place he loved, surrounded by people he loved,”
said Cindy Berger, Redford's publicist, in a comment to The U.S. Sun.
“He will be greatly missed. The family asks for privacy.”
Redford was born on August 18, 1936, in Van Nuys, California.
He is survived by his wife, German artist Sibylle Szaggars, and a multitude of iconic roles in film and television.
The actor was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 1973 film 'The Sting'.
Redford also became a director of the award-winning film 'A River Runs Through It', which is about the relationship of two brothers raised in rural Montana.
He won an Oscar for Best Director for the 1980 film 'Ordinary People'.
ENDURING LEGACY
In 2017, in an interview with Esquire UK, Redford expressed that he wants to be remembered for his work as both an actor and a director.
“What really matters is the work. And for me, it's important to do this work,”
he said.
“I don't think about what I will get out of it: 'What will the reward be?' I'm just focused on the work, on the pleasure of being able to do this work,”
he added.
“And that's where the pleasure lies: climbing the mountain is the pleasure, not standing on the summit.”
Redford was also known as the founder of the Sundance Institute, a nonprofit organization that supports independent artists. He helped to revitalize the film festival in Utah in 1984, renaming it the Sundance Film Festival.
Since then, the festival has become a platform for careers of filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky, and Paul Thomas Anderson.
Redford received an honorary Oscar in 2002 for his work with the Sundance Film Festival.
The festival will take place in Utah in 2026 and later move to Boulder, Colorado in 2027.
In addition to his film career, Redford was also actively involved in environmental activism, advocating for the preservation of Utah lands and opposing the construction of a highway through Utah Canyon in 1970.
