Massive Drone Assault on Ukraine
According to UATV: On March 11, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, deploying 99 combat drones, including models known as 'Shahed', 'Gerbera', and 'Italmas'. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed 90 of these unmanned aerial vehicles, demonstrating a high level of effectiveness in defending the country's airspace.
Launch Sites for the Attack
The drones were launched from multiple locations within Russia and occupied Crimea:
- Oryol
- Kursk
- Bryansk
- Millerovo
- Shatalovo
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk
- Hvardiiske in Crimea
Approximately 70 of the attacking drones were identified as 'Shahed' models. The assault resulted in drone debris falling in nine different locations across Ukraine.
The attack caused civilian casualties, with eight people reported injured in the city of Kharkiv. These events underscore the persistent volatility in the region and the ongoing security challenges facing Ukraine. This conflict is part of a broader war of aggression that escalated significantly in 2022, following Russia's initial invasion of Ukrainian territory in 2014.
This drone barrage is part of the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The extensive use of drones highlights the evolution of modern warfare tactics, while Ukraine's improving air defense performance underscores the critical role of technology in contemporary military conflicts. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, as the region remains a focal point of global security concerns.
