Ukrainian Intelligence: Russia Aims to Pressure Kyiv by Striking Nuclear Power Substations
According to Novyny.live: According to a January 17 statement from the press service of Ukraine's Defence Intelligence (GUR), the Russian Federation intends to strike the electrical substations of Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs). The goal of this campaign is to coerce Ukraine's leadership into accepting capitulatory terms to end the war. This represents a dangerous escalation, moving the conflict into a phase where critical civilian energy infrastructure is a direct target.
Moscow views an attack on Ukraine's strategic energy system as a key method of applying pressure. Specifically, Russia plans to disconnect NPP units from Ukraine's unified energy grid, a move that could severely impact the stability of the country's electricity supply. As of mid-January 2025, Russian forces have already conducted reconnaissance on ten critical energy infrastructure facilities across nine Ukrainian regions.
Pressure Campaign and Threat to Energy Security
As part of this broader pressure campaign, Moscow also aims to intensify intimidation against European and Western nations to deter their support for Ukraine. This intelligence underscores the serious threat Russia poses to Ukraine's energy security and that of the wider region. Attacks on nuclear facilities, even on supporting infrastructure, carry profound risks and are a major breach of international norms.
This development highlights a significant escalation in the conflict, particularly regarding strategic energy targets. A strike on an NPP's infrastructure could not only cripple Ukraine's energy security but also cause deep alarm among European nations reliant on regional stability. In light of this situation, it is crucial for the international community to maintain support for Ukraine and respond decisively to Russian actions that could have severe consequences for European security.
