A Russian reconnaissance vessel was driven out of the Irish Sea after it entered waters controlled by Ireland and patrolled an area with underwater pipelines and cables for energy and the Internet, reports 'The Guardian'.

The ship was spotted east of Dublin and southwest of the Isle of Man, but British and other naval forces initially noticed it while escorting the Russian military ship 'Admiral Golovko' last weekend.

The Irish naval vessel LÉ James Joyce accompanied it from the Irish exclusive economic zone (EEZ) at night, while aviation continued to monitor it as it headed south.

The presence of this ship raised concerns about the security of the connecting cables that ensure global internet traffic between Ireland and Great Britain.

Warnings about cable security

Edward Burke, a lecturer in war history at University College Dublin, stated that the situation is alarming.

It is known that the Irish defense forces observed the ship operating drones over Irish waters, raising concerns that it was conducting surveillance.

This year, there have been repeated concerns about critical infrastructure in Europe following sabotage on the Baltic gas pipeline and underwater internet cables between Finland and Estonia.

Information about the ship

The Russian ship 'Yantar' is classified as a research vessel with underwater rescue capabilities and performs tasks for the Russian Ministry of Defense, rather than the naval fleet.

According to analysts, it can use underwater vehicles for deep diving and has been previously observed working near marine infrastructure.

Irish and British defense forces worked together after the ships entered waters near Great Britain.

When 'Yantar' separated from 'Golovko' and headed north in the Irish Sea, it was monitored by another British ship, and the operation was publicly noted after activating automatic identification.

An Irish vessel attempted to communicate with the ship, but it did not respond, and late at night it left the waters.

Turkey also deployed military ships due to misunderstandings in the Aegean Sea, prompting Greece to send its ships to monitor the situation.

Turkish naval ships were conducting exercises when they received information about an Italian ship conducting research in the area.
