Ekin-Su appears on the cover of Vogue Mexico: what is the sensation about.
Fans of Ekin-Su are excited, but the situation is not quite what it seems
According to The Sun: Fans of Ekin-Su Kulchuloglu were thrilled to learn that she became this week's cover girl for Vogue.
They were surprised that the former Love Island star landed such an honorable position, as it is usually reserved for Hollywood celebrities and supermodels.
She shared the cover on InstagramHowever, the situation is not as straightforward as it appears.
The two-time Love Island star showed off the cover of Vogue Mexico and Latin America this week, posing in a white mini dress adorned with diamonds.
However, as reported by The Sun, Ekin’s cover was paid for by a brand as part of a commercial deal and is actually part of a special jewelry publication, not the official cover of the magazine.
The order was made by the Turkish company G Bride, which spent six figures promoting its line. This detail was not mentioned by Ekin when she shared the image.
“My debut in Vogue and the beginning of many stories... I used to cut out Vogue covers and imagined one day seeing my face there!”
“Today I am the girl on the cover of Vogue, and it’s just the first of many.”
“Thank you @voguelatam and the whole team for the honor of being on this cover. Thank you @gbrideco @arzuayare for inviting me to this project. I can’t thank you enough….”
The true cover of Vogue Mexico this month belongs to Jenny Ortiz, a Hollywood actress that fans are used to seeing on the cover.
Influencers are required to adhere to advertising standards that mandate labeling paid content with terms such as "advertisement" or "sponsored". They risk being fined if the Advertising Standards Department deems their post violates these rules.
In Ekin's post, there was no hashtag "advertisement" or any mention of paid content.
On the magazine cover, it can be read in fine print: “En colaboración con G Bride”, which means “in collaboration with G Bride”.
Reactions from colleagues and consequences
Other participants of the show failed to recognize the advertisement and rushed to congratulate Ekin. Catherine Aguiar wrote: “Wow, that’s incredible!! Congratulations!”
Demi Jones added: “Speechless!” while Lucy Donlan noted: “Incredible!!!! Congratulations girl, you always crush it.”
While paying for magazine covers is common practice in America, it is less common in the UK, particularly for Vogue.
Love Island host Maya Jama also made the cover of British Vogue in September 2023, solidifying her status among the country's most popular hosts.
This year has been tough for Ekin after her breakup with Curtis in May, just three months after they placed third in Love Island: All Stars.
Career Challenges
Her time on the show was overshadowed by a scandal when the star of Married At First Sight admitted to secretly dating Ekin for 10 months before her appearance on the show.
In an interview, Jorge Bertono stated that their relationship was “super intense and super intimate” and that they were “in love.”
Ekin’s representative assured that “Ekin was upfront with Jorge about her intention to start new relationships on Love Island.”
A year ago, Ekin's career was at risk after her appearance on Celebrity Big Brother.
Her housemates accused her of being fake and attention-seeking, resulting in her being the fourth to be eliminated.
She exited to boos and shouts, so upset by the reaction that she did not attend the finale.
“I felt like my career was over,” she confessed soon after. “I received death threats. I told my family that I was canceled, packed a bag, and left the country.”
Ekin later started therapy and admitted that it was too soon to participate in the show after her breakup with Davide Sanclimenti.
While her cover in Vogue seems like a new beginning, it’s not really what she hoped for.
Ekin’s representative did not respond to a request for comments.
Ekin-Su Kulchuloglu's career development, despite some success, is accompanied by scandals and difficulties. In particular, her cover in Vogue has become a topic of discussion due to the requirements for disclosing advertising content. This situation raises questions about the integrity of influencers and transparency in advertising, which will undoubtedly leave a mark on the industry. Read also
