How many people are left in Ukraine: the demographer named the real figure.

Western experts assert that 29 million people live in the territory of Ukraine under control. This information is supported by Oleksandr Hladun, deputy director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Experts estimate the population in these territories to be approximately 29 million people.

«With an error of plus or minus 1 million. In our difficult conditions, this is quite an acceptable error. More or less, this figure corresponds to reality. If someone mentions a figure of 28 or 30 million, it is hard to dispute this, because we do not have objective information», – Hladun added.

Earlier, Ella Libanova, director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, stated that Ukraine should grant refugees social status right on its territory. According to her, it is difficult for Ukraine to compete with the salaries that people earn abroad.

«You understand, we need to count on the fact that it will be better for people here, at home, than there. It is hard for us to oppose, say, the salaries that people earn in Germany, the Netherlands, or Britain. But we have other advantages. This is their homeland, the social climate they are used to. Here they have the proper social status, which often cannot be expected in the countries of emigration», – Libanova emphasized.

In an interview with «Glavkom», Libanova also noted that there will be no 50 million citizens in Ukraine anymore, so the country needs to restructure its economy considering the reduced population.

«We will not have 50 or 40 million citizens in the future. Only with intensive immigration. But these people will no longer be Ukrainians and probably not even Europeans», – said Libanova. The expert also discussed the importance of population density for the country's demographics.

It should be noted that before the full-scale invasion, there were 1.2 children per woman of childbearing age in Ukraine, and after the start of the military conflict, this figure dropped to 0.9. Ukraine ranks third in the world in this indicator.
