Christmas December 25: What is categorically forbidden to do on the holiday.
According to ТСН: This year, Christmas in Ukraine will be celebrated on Thursday, December 25. It is one of the most significant holidays for Ukrainians, as it is the day when Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary.
There are many prohibitions associated with this great holiday. Our ancestors believed that how you spend this day would affect the whole next year, so they tried to follow certain rules to avoid troubles.
What you should not do on Christmas:
you should not quarrel or curse, as this invites conflicts for the whole year;
you should not clean, wash, sew, chop wood or engage in household chores;
you should not refuse help, as this is considered a great sin and can lead to misfortunes;
you should not be stingy — our ancestors believed that stinginess on Christmas leads to poverty;
you should not borrow money, as this can 'give away' prosperity and luck;
you should not be sad — tears and sorrow on this day were considered a bad sign, as the holiday symbolizes joy and hope.
What is important to do on Christmas:
visit the church and participate in the festive liturgy;
sing carols;
greet relatives on the holiday;
spend time with family;
welcome carolers and generously reward them.
Don't forget that there are certain restrictions on Christmas Eve as well. Our ancestors adhered to these prohibitions, believing that following simple rules brings peace, prosperity, and God's grace into the home.
Christmas in Ukraine is not only a religious holiday but also an important cultural tradition that unites families and reminds of the values of love and mercy. By following customs, Ukrainians create a special holiday atmosphere that is passed down from generation to generation. Stay connected with your loved ones and make this day special not only for yourself but also for your dear ones.
