The USA wants to force Google to sell the Chrome browser.

The US Department of Justice is demanding that Google sell its Chrome browser as part of a competition process.

According to Bloomberg, a US court recognized the company as a monopolist in August 2024. Since then, competition authorities have been examining what measures should be taken to eliminate the company's anti-competitive practices, reports Mezha.Media.

The Department plans to go to court to force Google to sell Chrome, which is the most popular web browser in the world. The integration of Chrome with Google Search and other Google products has been cited as one of the factors limiting competition in the search sector.

Regulators also aim to have Google separate the Android operating system and other products like Google Search and the Google Play Store, which are typically pre-installed on Android devices. It was initially planned that Google could be forced to sell Android, but this demand was later withdrawn.

The Department of Justice proposes to require Google to provide licenses for data and allow free merging of search results in Google Search. This would give competitors and startups in the field of artificial intelligence the opportunity to improve their algorithms and create their own search indexes. Google could also be forced to share additional data with advertisers to give them more control over the placement of ads.

Google could no longer enter into exclusive contracts, such as the contract with Apple, which secured Google's status as the default search engine in Safari for $20 billion in 2022.

Google has challenged the competition decision, and the judge overseeing the case plans to hold a two-week hearing in April 2025 to discuss what changes the company plans. A final decision is expected in August 2025.
