Ukrenergo held its first European auction: electricity imports will become more stable

According to ТСН: The supply of electricity to Ukraine from neighboring European countries will become more predictable and reliable. The company 'Ukrenergo' successfully held the first unique monthly auction for the allocation of cross-border capacity.

According to official information from the company, the results of the auction demonstrated significant business interest in stable electricity supplies to Ukraine. The requests from supplier companies significantly exceeded the volumes offered for distribution.

Competition at the Borders

The highest competition was observed at the border with Hungary, where the total demand from traders reached a record 4625 MW, ten times higher than the actually allocated 460 MW. In this direction, 37 participants took part, of which 20 companies were given the right to import at a maximum price of 13.4 euros per megawatt.

Similar trends were observed at other crossings. At the border with Slovakia, 38 participants competed for the available 172 MW, submitting requests for 1826 MW. As a result, 20 companies became winners, and the crossing price was set at 16 euros per megawatt.

The Romanian direction also proved to be very in demand: out of the allocated 172 MW, the total demand was 1815 MW. Here, 10 out of 23 participants won, recording a price of 10.82 euros per megawatt.

Benefits for Ukraine's Energy System

The transition to common European auctions is a key step in the context of the constant threat of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

'Ukrenergo' emphasizes that the new mechanism will enhance the stability of the energy system, as imports will become guaranteed and transparent. In the long term, competition at the auctions may lead to a decrease in the cost of electricity imported from Europe for Ukrainian consumers and businesses.

This first monthly auction has become an important step towards integrating the Ukrainian energy system into the European energy market. It is expected that stable supplies will help not only ensure energy security but also create conditions for the development of the electricity market in Ukraine, saving money for enterprises and the population.
