Angelino Alfano is an Italian politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2016 to 2018 and was Deputy Prime Minister from 2013 to 2014. From 2008 to 2011, he held the position of Minister of Justice in Silvio Berlusconi's fourth cabinet. In 2018, Alfano was the chairperson of the OSCE.
Place of Birth. Education. Born on October 31, 1970, in Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. His father, Angelo Alfano, was a lawyer and a former local politician who also served as deputy mayor of Agrigento.
After studying law at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and obtaining a doctorate in corporate law from the University of Palermo, Angelino Alfano began his political career in the Christian Democratic Party.
Political Career. In 1994, he joined the new center-right party Forza Italia founded by Silvio Berlusconi and was elected to the provincial council of Agrigento.
In 1996, Alfano became the youngest member elected to the Regional Assembly of Sicily.
In 2001, following the victory of the center-right coalition Casa delle Libertà led by Berlusconi in the general elections of 2001, he became a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies.
Between 2005 and 2008, he also held the position of regional coordinator in Sicily for Forza Italia.
In the 2008 elections, where the center-right coalition led by Berlusconi won, Alfano was re-elected to parliament. In May 2008, at the age of 37, he became the youngest Minister of Justice in the history of the Italian Republic.
From April 28, 2013, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior in the Letta government.
On February 21, 2014, the Renzi government was formed, in which Alfano retained only the position of Minister of Interior.
From December 2, 2016, to June 1, 2018, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy in the Gentiloni government.
On March 18, 2017, he founded the new party Alternativa Popolare, which split from the NCD, and retained his position in the government.
From January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2018, he led the OSCE.
