The case of 'Awakow backpacks'. On October 31, 2017, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) conducted searches as part of an investigation into the embezzlement of funds for the purchase of tactical backpacks for the National Guard. The Ministry of Internal Affairs purchased backpacks at the end of 2014 - beginning of 2015 for the needs of the National Guard.

In 2016, it was reported that the former deputy of Awakow, Sergei Chobotar, and the son of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Alexander, were involved in a criminal case due to the purchase of 6,000 backpacks at inflated prices. A video from a hidden camera was released, showing Alexander Awakow possibly negotiating with Chobotar about the delivery of backpacks to the ministry. Media reported that the company supplying tactical backpacks to the Ministry of Internal Affairs may be connected with Vladimir Litvin, who is a friend of Alexander Awakow. A court allowed NABU detectives to examine the minister's calls in this matter. NABU also gained access to the bank accounts of the backpack supplier - Dniprovendor.

On October 1, 2017, after the searches, the son of the Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Awakow, former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sergei Chobotar, and Vladimir Litvin, who led the IT company Turboseo in 2014, were detained. The next day, the Solomensky District Court of Kiev ordered the release of Alexander Awakow under personal responsibility and obliged him to wear an electronic ankle bracelet.

In July 2018, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) closed the case in the 'backpack case' against two defendants - Alexander Awakow and Sergei Chobotar - as there was no direct sufficient evidence that they were aware of the plan to supply inferior backpacks.
