Bashar Hafiz al-Assad

Bashar Hafiz al-Assad - President of Syria
Bashar Hafiz al-Assad was born on September 11, 1965, in Damascus, Syria. He is the son of his father, President Hafiz al-Assad, and serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Armed Forces.
Bashar Assad graduated from the University of Damascus, where he completed his medical degree and specialized training at an eye center in London. He speaks Arabic, English, and French.
After returning to Syria in 1994, Bashar Assad served in the armed forces, where he attained various military ranks. He also worked as an advisor to his father and led a campaign against corruption.
Following the death of his father Hafiz Assad in 2000, Bashar Assad was elected Secretary-General of the Baath Party and appointed as President of Syria. He was re-elected as President in 2007, 2014, and 2021.

In 2023, Ukraine imposed personal sanctions against Bashar al-Assad and revoked his Ukrainian citizenship.

Bashar Assad belongs to the Assad family, he is married to Asma al-Akhras and has three children - two sons and a daughter.
