Bojko Metodij Borisov - Prime Minister of Bulgaria from July 2009 to March 2013, from November 2014 to January 2017, and since May 2017. He was also Mayor of Sofia from 2005 to 2009.
Place of birth. Education. Born on June 13, 1959, in Bankya to a family of a Ministry of Interior employee. His mother was a primary school teacher. In 1977, he attempted to enroll in the Faculty of State Security at the Higher School of the Ministry of the Interior, but was forced to choose another field due to the execution of his great-grandfather by communist insurgents in 1944 - the Faculty of Fire Safety (graduated in 1982).
Career. From 1982 to 1990, Bojko Borisov served in the Ministry of Interior, in the fire service, initially as a platoon leader, then as a company commander, and later as an instructor at the Higher Institute for Officer Training of the Ministry of Interior in Sofia, as a karate teacher.
In 1991, he founded the private security company 'Ipon-1', which had an influential and well-known clientele, including the security of the former socialist leader of Bulgaria, Todor Zhivkov, and former King Simeon II.
In 2004, he was awarded the rank of Lieutenant General.
Political career. From 2001 to 2005, he served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior in the government of Simeon Sakskoburggotski.
In 2005, Bojko Borisov began his political career. He was included in the electoral list of the National Movement party 'Simeon the Second' and was elected to the national parliament as a member of this party. However, he rejected the mandate and remained in his position in the Ministry of Interior. Soon after, Bojko Borisov left his position due to a conflict with the newly appointed Minister of Interior and resigned from his police service with the rank of Lieutenant General. In the same year, he successfully ran for the position of Mayor of Sofia and won the elections.
In 2006, he founded a new party 'Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria' (GERB).
On July 5, 2009, the GERB movement won the majority of seats in the national parliament in the next elections. Bojko Borisov formed a government from members of his party, which was approved by the National Assembly on July 27, 2009.
In February 2013, Bojko Borisov resigned along with his entire cabinet due to mass protests accompanied by clashes with the police in Sofia and other cities in Bulgaria.
On November 7, 2014, the Parliament of Bulgaria confirmed Borisov as Prime Minister again. 185 deputies voted for his candidacy, 85 against, and there were no abstentions.
On November 13, 2016, after the defeat of the GERB party's candidate, Tsvetana Tsacheva, in the presidential elections, Borisov resigned as Prime Minister.
On March 27, 2017, parliamentary elections were held, in which the GERB party won the victory.
From May 4, 2017, to May 12, 2021, he served as Prime Minister of Bulgaria.
Sports. Bojko Borisov holds a black belt in karate 7th Dan. Occasionally, he plays as a forward for FC 'Vitosha' (Bistritsa), a team that plays in the amateur football group 'V' Southwest.
Personal life. Divorced. From 1988 to 2009, he lived with the chairman of the Bulgarian American Credit Bank, Tsvetelina Borislavova. Borisov has a daughter, Veneta, from his first marriage to the ophthalmologist Stella, and two grandchildren.
