Orban suggested a 'clever move' to preserve the transit of Russian gas to Hungary.
Hungary received guarantees from Bulgaria regarding the transit of Russian gas
President of Hungary Viktor Orban announced that he received guarantees for the uninterrupted transit of Russian gas through the 'Balkan Stream' from Bulgaria. He provided this information after a meeting with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in Sofia. The negotiations became necessary after the change of government in Bulgaria following the parliamentary elections. Orban also noted that he received guarantees for the security of the gas supply route.
“Our task is to agree with the president and future members of the government on the security of the supply route. I received these guarantees yesterday,” the Hungarian prime minister is quoted by Russian state agencies.
Bulgaria postponed the collection of transit fees for Russian gas on its territory until December 2023, preparing for entry into the Schengen zone from January 1. This will not allow Hungary to increase the cost of gas it receives from Russia. Viktor Orban had previously threatened to veto Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen zone if it continued to charge transit fees.
Hungary is also negotiating the continuation of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. The transit agreement between Moscow and Kyiv is approaching its end, and Ukraine has refused to extend it due to the conflict. Orban suggested replacing Russian gas with other sources.
Thus, Hungary has agreed with Bulgaria on the transit of Russian gas through the 'Balkan Stream' and is considering alternative transit options through Ukraine.
