Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been the President of Turkey since August 28, 2014. He was the Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003 to 2014. He is the leader of the Turkish Justice and Development Party. From 1994 to 1998, he served as the Mayor of Istanbul. In 2018, he was re-elected as President in early elections in Turkey.

Childhood, Education. He was born in Istanbul. In 1965, he graduated from Piyale Pasha Primary School, and in 1973 from Imam Hatip High School. Since the diploma from the religious high school was not sufficient for university admission, Erdogan passed the final exams at Eyup High School. The family lived in poverty, so from a young age, Erdogan had to earn money through street trading.

Since 1969, Erdogan actively played football in many youth teams, although he did so without his father's knowledge, who did not support this passion.

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Marmara University in 1981. Even during his studies, Erdogan got involved in the activities of the National Association of Turkish Students.

Career. In 1976 (according to other sources - in 1975), he became the chairman of the youth wing of the pro-Islamic National Salvation Party in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul, and then the youth branch of the party in Istanbul. Erdogan held these positions until the military coup on September 12, 1980, after which the activities of all existing political parties were banned.

Until 1980, Erdogan also worked in Istanbul's transport institutions, but after the coup, he was unemployed. He then worked for several years as a manager in the private sector and ran a business, and in 1982 he completed military service.

In 1984, Erdogan became the chairman of the Welfare Party's Beyoglu branch, in 1985 - the chairman of the party's Istanbul branch, and also a member of the party's higher council.

From 1994 to 1997 - Mayor of Istanbul. Forced to resign, and soon after, the Welfare Party was banned. In 1998, Erdogan was sentenced to ten months in prison for publicly reciting Islamic-themed poems at a meeting. He served four months - from March to July 1999 - and was released early.

From 1999 to 2001 - he led the reformist wing of the Justice Party.

In August 2001, after the banning of the Welfare Party, he became one of the founders of the Justice and Development Party and became its chairman. In November 2002, the party won a majority of seats in parliament, allowing it to form a single-party government.

From 2003 to 2014 - Prime Minister of Turkey. Among Erdogan's achievements as Prime Minister are the monetary reforms of 2004-2005, which led to reduced inflation, fighting corruption, building new social institutions, and power plants.

Since August 2014 - President of Turkey, leader of the Turkish Justice and Development Party.

On June 24, 2018, Turkey held presidential and parliamentary elections in an extraordinary manner. Recep Erdogan won in the first round, receiving 53% of the votes, while the leader of the opposition Republican Party, Muharrem Ince, was supported by 31% of voters. According to the constitutional changes of 2017, the president of the country will be both the head of state and the head of government, taking over the functions of the prime minister.
