- French politician, member of the Socialist Party. Minister of Foreign Affairs of France (2016-2017), Prime Minister of France (2012-2014). Mayor of Nantes (1989-2012), Mayor of Saint-Herblain (1977-1989).Place of birth. Education. Born in Maulévrier (Department of Maine-et-Loire), he was the oldest of five children in his family. He received his primary education at the Catholic school Saint Joseph in Maulévrier. From 1961 to 1968, he attended the Lycée Colbert in Cholet. Later, he studied German at the University of Nantes. In 1969-1970, he studied at the University of Würzburg. In 1972, he graduated as a German teacher.
Career. In his youth, he was a member of the Christian rural youth movement. In 1972, he joined the Socialist Party.
From 1973, Ayrault worked as a German teacher in Saint-Herblain.
1976-1982 - General Council of the Department of Loire-Atlantique.
1977-1989 - Mayor and City Councilor of Saint-Herblain. He was elected as mayor at the age of 27 and was re-elected in 1983.
From March 20, 1989 - Mayor and City Councilor of the city of Nantes. Re-elected 1995, 2001, 2008.
1986-2012 - Member of the National Assembly of France for the Department of Loire-Atlantique (3rd constituency). Re-elected in 1988, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2007.
1997-2012 - Chairman of the Socialist Group in the National Assembly of France. Re-elected in 2002, 2007.
Since 2002 - President of the Urban Community and Member of the City Council of Nantes-Métropole, re-elected in 2008.
On May 15, 2012, President François Hollande appointed Ayrault as Prime Minister.
On March 31, 2014, Ayrault resigned after the Socialists' failure in the municipal elections.
From February 11, 2016, to May 10, 2017 - Minister of Foreign Affairs after the resignation of Laurent Fabius.
Family. Married, has two daughters.
