Mikhail Ivanovich Fomenko - Ukrainian football player, defender and midfielder, former head coach of the Ukrainian national team (2012-2016). Known for his appearances for 'Dynamo' (Kyiv). Player of the USSR national team (1972-1977). International Master of Sports (1975). Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1975).

After ending his active career, he became a football coach. Honored coach of Ukraine. Honored worker of physical culture and sports.

Place of Birth. Education. Born in the village of Malaya Rybytsya in the Sumy region. Graduate of the Sumy football school 'Spartak' (since 1962), for which he played from 1965 to 1969.

Football Career. In the years 1970-1971, he played for 'Zorya' Luhansk, from 1972 to 1978 - for Dynamo Kyiv. He played 24 matches for the USSR national team from 1972 to 1976. Position: Defender.

Achievements: UEFA Cup winner 1975, UEFA Super Cup winner 1975, Soviet champion 1974, 1975 and 1977, Soviet Cup winner 1974 and 1978, silver medalist of the European Championship 1972, bronze medalist of the 1976 Olympics.

Coaching Career. At the age of 30, Fomenko had to end his playing career due to a back injury. He completed two years of training at the coaching university.

In 1979, he was the head coach of the 'Frunzensets' Sumy club. From 1980 to 1984, he was the assistant to the head coach of 'Dynamo' Kyiv. He headed the coaching staff of FC 'Desna' Chernihiv (1985-1986), 'Krivoi Rog' (1987), 'Guria' Lanchkhuti, Georgia (1987-1989), 'Rashid' Baghdad, Iraq / National team of Iraq (1990), 'Automobilist' Sumy (1991-1992), 'Dynamo' Kyiv (1993), 'Veres' Rouen (1994), National team of Guinea (1994), 'CSKA - Borisfen' Kyiv (1994-1996), 'Metalist' Kharkiv (1996-2000, 2001-2003), CSKA Kyiv (2000-2001), 'Metallurg' Zaporizhzhia (2003), 'Tavria' Simferopol (2006-2008), 'Salute' Belgorod, Russia (2010-2011).

Coaching achievements: Ukrainian champion and cup winner (1993), finalist of the Ukrainian Cup (2001).

From December 2012 to 2016, he was the head coach of the Ukrainian national football team.

In the qualification for the World Cup in Brazil, the Ukrainian national team finished second in the group and reached the top 20 of the FIFA rankings, but could not participate in the World Cup due to the results of the playoffs against the French national team.

In the qualification phase for the 2016 UEFA European Championship in France, the Ukrainian national team finished third in the group and reached the playoffs, where they defeated the Slovenian national team and qualified for the final tournament.

At Euro 2016, the Ukrainians were eliminated in the group stage. After losing the first match with zero points and equally scored goals, the chances of advancing to the Round of 16 were lost, and Fomenko's team recorded the worst performance not only at Euro 2016 but also in many years of European Championships.

Even before the end of the group stage, Fomenko announced his resignation as head coach. He was succeeded by Andriy Shevchenko as the national team coach.

Awards and Titles. Honored coach of Ukraine, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, International Master of Sports. Honored worker of physical culture and sports of Ukraine. In 2004, Fomenko received the Order of Merit of the III degree.
