Views. Statements. At the end of April 2012, Sigmar Gabriel urged German politicians to boycott the European Football Championship in Ukraine due to the treatment of former Prime Minister Julia Tymoshenko. In an interview with the popular German weekly newspaper 'Bild am Sonntag', Gabriel said: 'Politicians must be careful not to become regime supporters. They will likely sit next to prison inmates and members of the secret police in the stadium. When in doubt, it is better not to go there.'
On September 25, 2015, Gabriel suggested improving relations with Russia, as Moscow plays an important role in resolving the Syrian conflict: '... Everyone should understand that it is impossible to maintain sanctions for a long time on one hand and ask for cooperation on the other... ... we will have to change our stance towards Russia.'
In this context, he called the start of construction of the second Nord Stream pipeline the beginning of 'other and better relations'. To complete this improvement process of relations, in Gabriel's opinion, the sanctions imposed by the EU against Moscow should be lifted. In response to this proposal, Gabriel, the head of the German Federal Chancellery, Peter Altmaier, stated that the German government would continue its policy of sanctions against Russia, which were imposed in response to the annexation of Crimea and Moscow's role in the conflict in Donbass. Gabriel's proposal was also condemned by the leader of the Greens in the Bundestag, Marieluise Beck.
