Valeriya Alexeevna Gontareva - Ukrainian financial expert, banker, capital market specialist. Head of the National Bank of Ukraine (2014-2018).

Place of Birth. Education. Born in Dnepropetrovsk. In 1987 she graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. In 1997 she graduated from the Kyiv National University of Economics (Master's degree in Economics). She speaks Ukrainian, Russian, and English.

Career. From 1993 to 1996, she worked as a senior economist at the Ukrainian Interbank Foreign Exchange Center.

Since 1997, Gontareva was on the board of the Ukrainian subsidiary of the French Societe Generale, where she was responsible for banking at the capital markets.

Since January 2001, Gontareva held the position of First Deputy Chairman and Head of the Financial Market Division at ING Bank Ukraine, a subsidiary of the Dutch bank ING.

Since December 2007, she has been the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Investment Capital Ukraine Group (ICU, one of the largest players in asset management and bond trading).

From September 2013, she was the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Avangard Bank. Avangard Bank was registered by the NBU in July 2013. According to the bank, Westal Holding Company (Cyprus) of the Investment Capital Ukraine Group (ICU) held 99.9902% of the shares of Avangard Bank on April 1, 2014.

On June 17, Valeriya Gontareva was dismissed as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of JSC Avangard Bank.

On June 19, 2014, the Ukrainian Parliament confirmed Valeriya Gontareva as the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

Valeriya Gontareva has 20 years of experience in finance and banking.

She founded the private pension fund 'Dynasty'.

Gontareva has known Poroshenko since the early 2000s when the future president was actively working to develop his bank Mria (which was sold to the Russian VTB Bank in 2006). As an investment banker, according to the magazine Mirror of the Week, Gontareva was involved in structuring financing deals for the development of the Roshen business in Russia.

On April 10, 2017, Gontareva announced her resignation effective May 10. Yakiv Smoliy took over the duties of the head of the National Bank from May 11.

On March 15, 2018, the Ukrainian Parliament relieved Valeriya Gontareva of her duties as Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

Since 2018, she has been living in London and working at the London School of Economics.

Awards. In June 2008, Gontareva was awarded the medal and honor certificate of the Cabinet of Ministers for her personal contribution to the development of the Ukrainian capital market and her high professionalism.

In 2012, she ranked 98th on the list of the 100 most influential women in Ukraine by Focus magazine.
