Place of Birth. Education. He was born in Lisbon in 1949. He graduated from the prestigious Camões High School in 1965 and received the National High School Award as the best student in the country. From 1965 to 1971, he studied Physics and Electrical Engineering at the Higher Technical Institute. He was a volunteer in an organization supporting slum dwellers.

Career. From 1971 to 1976, he was an assistant professor and taught telecommunications signal theory.
After the victory of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal on April 25, 1974, he joined the Socialist Party and soon became one of its leaders.
1976-1995 - Deputy in the Portuguese Parliament for the municipality of Castelo Branco.
In 1992, he was elected Secretary-General of the Socialist Party and Leader of the Opposition.

Hobbies. He describes physics as his most important intellectual passion, is interested in medieval history, cinema, and opera.
Family. In 1972, he married Luísa Guimarães e Melo, who died of cancer in 1998 after 26 years of marriage, and they had two children. In 2001, he married for the second time - Catarina Marques di Almeida Vaz Pinto.
