Criminal Cases.

On October 25, 2003, he was arrested at Novosibirsk Airport by law enforcement authorities on suspicion of fraud and tax evasion, interrogated, and sent to detention center No. 1 'Matrosskaya Tishina'. While in custody, Michail Chodorkowski announced his intention to leave business and become the Chairman of the Board of the regional public organization 'Open Russia'. The criminal cases against the former chairman of OAO 'Oil Company 'YUKOS' Michail Chodorkowski and the former chairman of the board of LLC 'NFO 'MENATEP' Platon Lebedev were combined.

On May 31, 2005, Michail Chodorkowski and Platon Lebedev were sentenced by the Meshchansky District Court to 9 years in prison each. The appeal decision of the Moscow City Court shortened the sentence to 8 years. They were found guilty of six counts, including fraud, embezzlement of state funds, embezzlement of valuable raw materials - apatite concentrate - in significant amounts, multiple violations of court rulings, and tax evasion. In October 2005, Michail Chodorkowski was transferred to penal colony JG 14/10 in Krasnokamensk in the Chita region.

Some individuals and organizations viewed the verdict as politically motivated prosecution, initiated by the government to support opposition parties - CPRF, Yabloko, and the Union of Right Forces.

In January 2005, while the main trial against YUKOS was still ongoing, the Prosecutor General's Office announced the initiation of a new case against the same accused. This time they were accused of embezzling oil and laundering money from the sale. In December 2006, Michail Chodorkowski was transferred to the SIZO Chita 'for investigative actions'. The indictment was issued in February 2007.

In February 2009, the Chamanovizki Court in Moscow ordered Platon Lebedev and Michail Chodorkowski to be transported to Moscow for the hearing of the second criminal case. The process began in March. On May 14, the same court extended their detention until August 17 as part of the second criminal case. The court granted the corresponding application of the prosecutors, who pointed out that in the event of the lifting of the restrictions in the second criminal case, the possibility of conditional early release existed since they had already served a significant part of the sentence from the first conviction. On December 27, Michail Chodorkowski and Platon Lebedev were found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison. This term is deducted from 2003.
