Oksana Khvostenko started biathlon at the age of 16 and marked her international debut in 1996 by winning a silver medal at the Junior World Championship in the individual race. She has been a constant member of the Ukrainian national team since 1998. She has won several medals at continental championships, Universiades, and national championships.
The strength of Oksana Khvostenko is shooting. She is among the top ten female biathletes in this discipline (89.7% - the best result of all biathletes in the 2006-2007 season), but significantly lags in speed behind the world leaders.
Awards and Achievements. Honored Master of Sports, four-time medalist at the World Championships.
European Championship-1999 (Ichevsk) – Bronze in the 7.5 km sprint.
European Championship-2001 (Oberhof) – Bronze in the 4x7.5 km relay.

At the 2011 World Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk, as part of the Ukrainian national team, she won the silver medal in the women's relay.

She works as a coach at the ski biathlon base in Chernihiv.
Disqualification. On March 13, 2011, Oksana Khvostenko failed a doping test after the women's relay at the 2011 World Championship due to ephedrine, where the Ukrainian women's team finished second. On August 11, 2011, the IBU Anti-Doping Commission decided to disqualify Khvostenko for one year - from March 13, 2011, to March 12, 2012. Moreover, the Ukrainian relay team that finished in second place at the World Championship was disqualified and had to return the silver medals and prize money for that race. Thus, the silver medals were awarded to the French athletes, while the bronze medal went to the athletes from Belarus.
On September 5, 2011, the sports tribunal of the International Biathlon Union confirmed the one-year disqualification of the Ukrainian biathlete.
Marital Status. Married to biathlete Vyacheslav Derkach - Head of the Ski-Biathlon Base in Chernihiv. The couple raises their son Nikita and daughter Anna.
