Alexander Alexandrovich Karelin - Russian athlete, wrestler in Greco-Roman style, Olympic champion and medalist of the Olympic Games (1988, 1992, and 1996 - gold medal, 2000 - silver medal), nine-time world champion (1989-1991, 1993-1995, 1997-1999), in 1991, 1993-1996, 1998-2000). Member of the State Duma of the Russian Federation (1999, 2003, 2007).
Place of birth. Education. Born in Novosibirsk. Graduated from Novosibirsk Automobile Technical School in 1985, 1991 - Omsk Institute of Physical Education and Sports. Also graduated from the Novosibirsk Higher Military Command School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR and St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (2001).
In 1998, he defended his dissertation on 'Methodology for conducting countermeasures against throws with a bow' at the St. Petersburg Lesgaft Academy of Physical Education. In 2002 he became a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences. Athletic career. Karelin began Greco-Roman wrestling in 1981 at the sports society 'Burevestnik' under coach Viktor Mikhailovich Kuznetsov. In 1984 he achieved the rank of Master of Sports of the USSR, in 1985 - Master of International Sports. The following year he was selected for the USSR national team.
He competed in the weight category up to 130 kg. He won three Olympic medals (1988 - Seoul, 1992 - Barcelona, 1996 - Atlanta) and earned silver in 2000 in Sydney. Nine-time world champion, twelve-time European champion, thirteen-time Russian champion, two-time winner of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR, four-time holder of the Golden Belt of the strongest fighter in the world, winner of many major tournaments, recipient of the Fair Play movement award for fair play. At the age of 20 (1988), he received his first state award - the Order of Friendship of Peoples. During the same time he was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.
Alexander Karelin is among the 25 best athletes of the 20th century worldwide, alongside stars such as footballer Pele, heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, gymnast Larisa Latynina.
Since 1992, the Olympic champion has been leading the public organization 'Karelin Fund', which promotes sports and a healthy lifestyle. Awarded in 1996 with the star 'Hero of Russia'. Honorary citizen of Novosibirsk.
In public service and politics. Since April 1995, he served in the Main Directorate of Physical Protection of the Federal Tax Service of Russia as a senior specialist, Colonel of the Tax Service.

Since 2001, Alexander Karelin is a member of the Supreme Council of the party 'United Russia'.
Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation for five terms (1999-2003, 2003-2007, 2007-2011, 2011-2016, 2016-2017). Was a member of the Duma Committee on Health and Sport, member of the Geopolitics Commission. Since December 2007, a member of the GD Committee on International Affairs. Since September 2016, he worked in the Energy Committee.
On September 15, 2020, he resigned from his position as a deputy of the State Duma.
On September 25, 2020, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the Novosibirsk Region granted Karelin the powers of a Senator of the Russian Federation.
Family. Married. Has two sons and a daughter. Son Ivan practices Greco-Roman wrestling, daughter Vasilisa - artistic gymnastics.
