Biography of Bronisław Komorowski

Date of Birth: 04.07.1952

Place of Birth. Education. He was born in Oborniki Śląskie in the family of Count Zygmunt Leon Komorowski. He comes from an old Lithuanian family with a history dating back to the 15th century. A distant cousin of his mother was an heir to Belgian princess Mathilde. In 1977, he graduated from the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw.

Career. In December 1971, he was first arrested by the communist regime of Poland for participating in protests. In 1976, he took part in actions in support of workers from the cities of Radom and Ursus, collaborating with the Workers' Defense Committee and the Movement for Defense of Human Rights and Citizens. He worked as a journalist, underground publisher, distributor. During his underground activities, he was persecuted and repeatedly detained.

In 1977, he became a history teacher at the seminary at the Catholic sanctuary 'Sacred Heart of Jesus'.

1980-1981 - worked at the Social Research Center of the trade union 'Solidarity'. In 1981, he was arrested and interned.

In 1982, he became the editor-in-chief of the independent underground magazine 'ABC', dealing with issues of Eastern and Central-Eastern Europe.

In 1989, he became a member of the Association Polish Aid - an organization helping Poles living abroad. He was also president of the Polish Libraries Aid Foundation, president of the Atlantic Integration Association, president of the Maritime and River Association.

1989-1990 - head of the office of the Minister of Cooperation with Political Organizations and Associations Aleksander Hall.

In 1991, he was first elected to the Sejm.

1990-1993 - Deputy Minister of National Defense, specializing in social and educational issues in the government of Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, and Hanna Suchocka.

1997-2000 - Chairman of the parliamentary National Defense Committee.

2000-2001 - Minister of National Defense in Jerzy Buzek's government.

Since 2001 - member of the liberal party 'Civic Platform', in 2006 he became its vice-chairman under the leadership of Donald Tusk.

2005-2010 - Deputy Marshal, Marshal of the Sejm.

On April 10, 2010, Bronisław Komorowski assumed the duties of President of Poland following the death of Lech Kaczyński.

In July 2010, he was elected President of Poland. He won the early elections against the brother of the deceased president - Jarosław Kaczyński.

On August 5, 2015, Komorowski left office. On August 6, 2015, the President of Poland became Andrzej Duda, elected to this position on May 24, 2015.

Views and assessments. The ninth President of Poland - a liberal who declared the fight for human rights as his life's goal, a moderate Catholic. He seeks deep European integration while maintaining a conservative stance on historical issues and cooperation with neighboring countries. Bronisław Komorowski gained a reputation as a flexible and pragmatic politician.
