Biography of Levko Lukyanenko

Date of Birth: 24.08.1928

Place of Birth, Education. Born in the village of Khrypivka, Hordnyansky District, Chernihiv Region. In 1958, he graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Career. From 1944 to 1953, he served in the Soviet Army. In 1953, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

After graduating, he worked as a propagandist in the party committee of the Radechiv District (CPSU).

Beginning in 1959, he was an employee of the Hlyniany District Attorney's Office, Lviv Region. There he founded an anti-Soviet organization, 'Ukrainian Workers and Peasants Union', which advocated for the separation of Ukraine from the USSR. In 1961, Lukyanenko was expelled from the party and sentenced to death for 'anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda'. Later, the sentence was commuted to a 15-year prison term.

After his release in 1976, he co-founded the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. In 1977, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison and 5 years of exile. He was released in 1988.

1990-1992 - People's Deputy of Ukraine of the I convocation from one of the districts of Ivano-Frankivsk region. In 1990, he was elected chairman of the newly founded Ukrainian Republican Party (URP).

In 1991, he participated in the presidential elections in Ukraine. He received 4.49% of the valid votes cast.

1992-1994 - Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada.

1994-1998 - People's Deputy of Ukraine of the II convocation from one of the districts of Volyn region.

He participated in the elections to the Verkhovna Rada in 1998 (No. 1 National Front Coalition). The political force did not overcome the 4 percent threshold.

Since 2000, he has been the chairman of the URP.

2002-2006 - People's Deputy of Ukraine of the IV convocation from the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (No. 5 on the ballot). Member of the parliamentary committee on national security and defense.

2006-2007 - People's Deputy of Ukraine of the VI convocation from BYuT (No. 6 on the list). At the time of the elections, he was nonpartisan. Member of the committee on human rights, national minorities and interethnic relations, chairman of the subcommittee on victims of political repression.

In 2006, he left the URP 'Sobor' together with his supporters and founded a new party - Ukrainian Republican Party Lukyanenko.

On June 15, 2007, he submitted his resignation from the parliamentary mandate at his own request.

On April 16 2013, he decided to resign from his position as chairman of the Ukrainian Republican Party Lukyanenko and remain its honorary chairman.

Death. On July 7 2018, it was reported that Levko Lukyanenko was admitted to the reanimation of the clinical Klinik 'Feofania' with stroke and pneumonia. On the same day, Levko Lukyanenko died in the 'Feofania' clinic after a long illness caused by leukemia, thrombosis issues, and leukocytes, following a stroke.

Honors. Hero of Ukraine (2005). Awarded the Order of Yaroslav the Wise, 5th class (2007).
