Maria Matios

Date of Birth: 19.12.1959
Maria Wassiljewna Matios - Ukrainian writer, politician. Winner of numerous literary awards, including the Shevchenko Literature Prize (2005), Coronation of Words (2007) and BBC Book of the Year (2008). People's Deputy of Ukraine of the VII Congress of the UDAR Party and the VIII Congress of the Petro Poroshenko Block Party.
Place of Birth. Education. Born in the village of Roschki in the Putila District of Chernivtsi Oblast. In 1982, she graduated from the philological faculty of Chernivtsi University (Department of Ukrainian Language and Literature). She lives in Kyiv.
Career. She was the editor-in-chief of the Bukovyna Magazine, the regional organization of the Union of Writers of Ukraine in Chernivtsi, and served in the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
In 1992, she made her debut as a prose author in the 'Kiev' magazine with the novella 'Jurjana and Dovhopol'.
In November 2005, she was appointed Deputy Chair of the Committee for the National Prize of Ukraine in the Taras Shevchenko sphere.
Author of seven poetry collections: 'From Grass and Leaves' (1982), 'Fire of Resin' (1986), 'Garden of Impatience' (1994), 'Ten Liters of Frost Water' (1995), 'For Nicholas' (1995), 'Women's Arc' (2001), 'Women's Arc in the Garden of Impatience' (2007).
Author of prose works: 'Life is Short' (2001), 'Nation' (2001, 2002, 2007), 'Sweet Darya' (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008), 'Diary of a Convicted' (2005), 'Mr. & Mrs. U in the Land of UA or Mr. and Mrs. U in the Land of ukriv' (2006), 'Nation. Revelation' (2006), 'Nacjia' (in Polish, 2006), 'Private Diary. Maidan. War...' (2015), 'Bookova-Zemlya' (2019), 'Mothers' (2023).
Political Career. From December 2012 to November 2014 - People's Deputy of Ukraine of the VII Congress of the UDAR Party (No. 2 on the party list). Secretary of the Committee on Spirituality and Culture. Non-partisan.
In the early parliamentary elections in the fall of 2014, Matios entered the Verkhovna Rada through the lists of the Petro Poroshenko Block Party (under No. 7). Non-partisan.
Awards. Winner of the 'Book of the Year' competition (2004, novel 'Sweet Darya'), laureate of the National Prize of Ukraine in the Taras Shevchenko sphere (2005, 'Sweet Darya'). In 2007, she won the Grand Prix of the 'Coronation of Words' competition for the novel 'Almost Never Instead', which also became the 'Book of the Year 2007'. In 2008 - winner of the 'Book of the Year' competition in the 'Elegant Literature - Modern Ukrainian Prose' category for the novel 'Moskaliza. Mama Maritza - Wife of Christopher Columbus'. Honored Cultural Worker of Ukraine (2008). Honorary Citizen of Chernivtsi.
Family. Married, has one son. Maria Matios' brother Anatoliy Matios, a former investigator of the Prosecutor General's Office and later head of the SBU in Lviv and Odessa Oblasts, was from 2010 to 2012 Deputy Head of the Main Control Commission of the Presidential Administration and was appointed Deputy Prosecutor General - chief prosecutor on August 26, 2014.
