Biography of Borys Paton

Date of Birth: 27.11.1918

Place of Birth. Education. Borys Paton was born into the family of professor of the Kyiv Industrial Institute, Yevgeniy Oskarovich Paton. His father was a leading specialist in his field and a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1941, Borys graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

Career. In 1941-1942, he worked as an engineer in the electrical engineering laboratory of the "Krasnoe Sormovo" plant in Nizhny Novgorod. Subsequently, he became a senior research fellow, head of the department, and deputy director.

Since 1953 and to this day, he has been heading the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute.

In 1945, Borys Paton defended his dissertation to obtain the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences, and in 1952 he became a Doctor of Technical Sciences.

In 1951, he was elected a corresponding member, and in 1958, a full member (academician) of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 1962, he has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1992 - the Russian Academy of Sciences).

Activities. Borys Paton is the president of the International Association of Academies of Sciences, president of the Council of Presidents of National Academies of Sciences of the member states of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. He is also the head of the Coordinating Council of the Interstate Scientific and Technical Program "Reliable Pipeline Transport", head of the Interstate Scientific Council on Welding and Related Technologies (CIS), a member of the Interstate Committee on Scientific and Technical Development of the CIS member countries, a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Nuclear Safety Fund (Vienna), co-chairman of the Board of Directors of the "Reliable Pipeline Transport" Association and a member of the Scientific Council of the Austrian-Ukrainian Institute of Science and Technology. In January 2008, Borys Paton was appointed a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

Main Directions of Scientific Research. Borys Paton is a renowned scientist in the fields of electric welding, metallurgy, and metal technology. His scientific research is devoted to the processes of automatic and semi-automatic welding under flux, the development of theoretical foundations for the creation of welding robots and power sources, the control of welding processes, and the creation of new promising designs and functional materials of the future. Under his leadership, a fundamentally new welding method was created - electroslag welding. The scientist led research on the application of heat sources to improve the quality of molten metal, creating a new field of metallurgy - special electrometallurgy.

Borys Paton initiated and intensified research on the use of welding and related technologies in space, creating structures for space vehicles. He is a recognized leader in this field of scientific and technical activity. He is also the initiator of the unique technology of welding living tissues, which is used in surgery.

Borys Paton is the author and co-author of over 720 inventions (500 of them foreign patents), and over 1200 various publications, including 20 scientific monographs.

Honorary Titles. Borys Paton is an honorary member of the National Academies of Sciences of Armenia, India, Kyrgyzstan, the International Academy of Astronautics USA, American Welding Society, The Club of Rome, British Welding Institute, German Welding Society, Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, and many other academies and associations. He is also an honorary doctor of the Higher Technical School of Chemnitz, Kyiv National University named after T.G. Shevchenko, St. Petersburg State Technical University, National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI", Kharkiv State Polytechnic University, and others.

Scientific Awards. Borys Paton has been awarded the S.I. Vavilov Medal of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Gold Medal named after M.V. Lomonosov of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Gold Medal named after V.G. Shukhov of the Union of Engineering and Scientific and Technical Societies of Russia, the Grand Silver Medal of the International Engineering Academy (Russia), the Gold Medal named after S.P. Korolev of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other awards from scientific societies and organizations of many countries worldwide.

The awards include the Stalin (State) Prize of the USSR, Lenin Prize, V. Vernadsky Prize, State Prize of Ukraine, and others.

State Awards. Borys Paton is a Hero of Socialist Labor, Hero of Ukraine. He has also been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of Peoples' Friendship, the honorary distinction of the President of Ukraine, the Orders of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V and IV grades, as well as awards from Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Russia, and Czechoslovakia.

Scientific Titles. Borys Paton is an academician (full member) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (formerly USSR Academy of Sciences), Russian Academy of Sciences (formerly USSR Academy of Sciences), Academy of Europe, International Academy of Sciences, Education, Industry and Arts of the USA, National Academy of Sciences.
