Career. In 1993–1994, he was a journalist at Latvian Radio. Editor of foreign policy and international relations issues. 1995–1996 he was an advisor in the Political Department of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia and from March to September 1996 Director of this Department.
From September 1996 to May 1997, he was Deputy Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia for Defense Policy. From May to August 1997, he was Acting Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia and from August 1997 to October 2008 he was Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia.
2002–2003 he was Deputy Head of the Latvian Delegation in NATO accession negotiations, and from 2005 to 2007 he was head of the office for organizing meetings of the heads of state of NATO member countries.
From October 2008 to October 2011, he was Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Latvia.
From October 25, 2011, to May 2023, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
In 2014, he was elected as a member of the 12th Saeima of Latvia. Member of the Council for Integration and Vice President of the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO Affairs.
On May 31, 2023, Edgars Rinkevics was elected as the President of Latvia.
Personal Life. On November 6, 2014, he came out, becoming the first politician in Latvian history to openly disclose his homosexual orientation.
