Herman Achille Van Rompuy - Belgian politician, President of the European Council (2010-2014), Prime Minister of Belgium (2008-2009).

Place of Birth. Education. Born in Etterbeek (Belgium). He obtained a degree in philosophy and economics from the University of Leuven (Belgium).

Political Career. Member of the Christian Social Party and Flemish since 1975. From 1988 to 1993, he was the chairman of this party.

He held various government positions - advisor to the Minister of Finance, advisor to the Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Finance and Small Enterprises, etc.

Member of the Belgian Senate from 1988 to 1995.

From 1993 to 1999, he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Budget in the Belgian government.

From 2007 to 2008, he was the President of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium.

As of December 1, 2009, he was the permanent President of the European Council.

On March 1, 2012, he was appointed for a second term, which ended in November 2014.

On December 1, 2014, he was succeeded in this position by the former Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk.

Family. Married. Four children - two sons and two daughters.

In 2015, he was granted the personal title of Count van Rompuy by King Philippe I of Belgium.

Hobbies. In his spare time, he writes haikus in Flemish. In his haikus, Rompuy writes about loneliness, God, flowers, death. In Japan, there is a fan club for his works.
