Valentin Symonenko

Date of Birth: 07.04.1940

Place of Birth. Education. Born in Odessa. In 1962 he graduated from the Odessa Institute of Civil Engineering and Construction. He defended his doctoral thesis 'Improvement of Management of Socio-Economic Processes in the Regions' (1996).

Career. Started as a foreman at the construction of the Kyiv Hydropower Plant. He progressed from construction engineer to director of the cement plant of the Trust 'Odessabeton'.

1983-1991 - Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Odessa City Council, people's deputy.

Since 1991 - Chairman of the City Council and City Executive of Odessa.

In March 1992, he was appointed representative of the President of Ukraine (Leonid Kravchuk) in the Odessa region.

Since July 1992 - First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine in the Vitold Fokin government. In October 1992, he performed the duties of the Prime Minister (until his appointment as the head of Leonid Kuchma's government).

People's deputy of Ukraine of the I-II convocation.

In 1996, he was elected by the Supreme Council as the head of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine.

In December 2003, he was appointed head of the Accounting Chamber for a second term. In July 2011, he was dismissed due to the expiration of his term.

Since summer 2006 member of the Council of the Civic Political Association Ukrainian Forum.

In spring 2009 he became a member of the civil movement New Ukraine.

Author of over 200 printed works on the problems of socio-economic well-being of Ukraine, the establishment of a market economy, regional policy, education, and execution of state budgets, the role of executive and legislative in this process, including books: 'The Regions of Ukraine Come to Life' (1995), 'The Ukrainian Black Sea: Potential Opportunities and Development Perspectives' (1996), 'The Regions of Ukraine - Development Challenges' (1997), 'Regret?!' (1997), 'Fundamentals of Economic Theory' (2000), 'The Basics of a Unified State Financial Control System in Ukraine' (2006), 'The Five Years of Independence: Economic Essays' (2007), 'The Five-Year 'Whirlwind' Period: Economic Essays' (2011).

Member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.

Awards. Honored Economist of Ukraine. Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Academician of the Academy of Economic Sciences. Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine for Science and Technology (2003).

Hero of Ukraine awarded the Order of the State (2009). Awarded the Orders of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the 5th degree (2006), 'For Merit' in three degrees, 'Friendship of Peoples' (1981), Order of the Work of the Red Banner (1976).

Hobbies. Mountaineering. Master of Sports, Honored Coach of Ukraine, multiple champion of Ukraine and the USSR, President of the Ukrainian Mountaineering and Climbing Association. Head of the first national expedition to Mount Everest (March-May 1999), expedition 'Ukraine-Himalaya-2001'.
