Place of Birth. Education. Born in Donetsk. In 1984, he graduated from school No. 115 in Donetsk. In 1988, he graduated from the Baku High Military Command School for Command Tactics of Motorized Infantry Troops (Specialization - Engineer for the Maintenance of Armored and Automotive Vehicles). In 1998, he graduated from Donetsk National University with a focus on Law (Faculty of Economics and Law, distance learning, qualification - Lawyer). In 2006, he graduated from Donetsk National University with a focus on Banking (qualification - Master of Banking).

Career. From 1988 to 1996, he served in the Armed Forces and the National Guard of Ukraine (in the positions of commander of the air assault platoon, reconnaissance battalion, and head of reconnaissance of a guard regiment).

Since 1996, he has worked at the Regional Office of the National Bank of Ukraine in Donetsk as a first category economist, senior economist, head of the sector, deputy head of the department.

Since 2002 - Head of the Banking Supervision Department of the Central Bank of Ukraine in the Donetsk Region.

Since July 15, 2010 - Deputy Chairman of the NBU (from July to December - Vladimir Stelmasch, from December 2010 - Sergey Arbuzov). Supervised the Main Department for Banking Supervision, the Department for Control, Methods, and Licensing of Foreign Exchange Transactions, the Department for Normative and Methodological Support for Banking Regulation and Supervision, the Department for Registration, Licensing, and Reorganization of Banks, and the Department for Financial Monitoring.

Since December 25, 2012 - Acting Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine.

On January 11, 2013, he was appointed as the head of the NBU of Ukraine by the Supreme Council (at the suggestion of President Viktor Yanukovych). On February 24, 2014, Parliament dismissed Sorkin due to his resignation from the position of NBU Chairman and appointed Stephan Kubiv as his successor.

Awards. Honored Economist of Ukraine (2011). Third Rank of State Service (2011).

Wealth. According to the declaration for the year 2012, Sorkin's total income was 2.218 million Hryvnias. Wife - Angela Valentinovna Sorkina (Stepanova), born on 27.02.1966 in Donetsk, deputy chairman of the board of UkrBusinessBank (from 2004 to 2010, the chairman of this bank was Sergey Arbuzov, whose owner is the eldest son of President Alexander Yanukovych), lives in Donetsk. Son - Valentin Igorevich Sorkin, born on 13.06.1990 in Donetsk, works at the auditing company UkrVostok Audit, lives in Donetsk.

Father Vyacheslav Sorkin (born 1944) - originally from Stavropol, graduated from the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute, worked from 1968 to 1997 at the Donetsk Institute of Southern Scientific and Research Institute of Gazprom. Currently, he is the deputy head of the Investment and Construction Department of OAO Gazprom (Russia). Member of the Supervisory Board of the Donetsk OJSC Southern Scientific and Research Institute of Gazprom (the owner of 40% of the company's shares is Gazprom). Mother - Larisa Sorkina (Detyuk), born in 1943 in Sverdlovsk, pensioner. The parents live in Moscow.

Charges and Wanted Status. On September 18, 2015, a criminal case was opened, and simultaneously the Security Service of Ukraine declared the former head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Igor Sorkin, and the former chairman of Real Bank, Vladimir Agafonov, as wanted. The criminal case, which is investigated by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine in cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine, was opened due to the embezzlement of funds of the National Bank and the Agrarian Fund in the amount of 2.8 billion Hryvnias. The SBU press service claims that the embezzlement of funds occurred with the prior agreement of the members of the criminal organization founded by the owner of Real Bank and Brokbusinessbank, Sergey Kurchenko.

On March 1, 2016, the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv convicted the former head of the National Bank Igor Sorkin in absentia.
