Career. In 1974, Schulz joined the youth organization of the Social Democrats, Jusos.
From 1977 to 1982, he worked in various publishing houses and bookstores.
From 1982 to 1994, he owned a bookstore.
In 1984, Martin Schulz became an advisor to the city of Würselen in North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1987 to 1998, he was the mayor of the same city.
From 1991 to 1999, he was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
In 1995, Martin Schulz became a member of the party's executive in the Middle Rhine region and the following year was elected chairman of the party in Aachen. In 1999, he became a member of the national board.
In 1994, he was elected to the European Parliament. In the subsequent elections (1999, 2004, and 2009), he was re-elected.
From 1994 to 1996, he worked in the subcommittee on human rights of the Party of European Socialists, then from 1996 to 2000 in the same role on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.
From 2000 to 2004, Schulz was the chairman of the German social democratic group in the European Parliament.
Since 2002, he was the vice-chairman of the parliamentary group of the Socialists and was elected chairman in 2004.
Since 2009, he was the chairman of the Party of European Socialists and later of the social democratic group.
On January 17, 2012, Martin Schulz succeeded Jerzy Buzek as President of the European Parliament.
On June 18, 2014, Schulz was elected chairman of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, leading to his resignation as President of the European Parliament.
On July 1, 2014, he was re-elected as President of the European Parliament.
On January 17, 2017, Schulz was succeeded as President of the European Parliament by Antonio Tajani.
On March 19, 2017, Martin Schulz was elected chairman at the congress of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and was nominated as the sole SPD candidate for the office of Chancellor in the autumn elections.
On February 13, 2018, Martin Schulz announced that he was resigning from the chairmanship of the SPD.
