Roman Vladimirovich Suchenko - First Deputy Chairman of the Chernihiv Regional Council, Deputy of the Chernihiv Regional Council, journalist and former political prisoner.
Place of Birth. Education. Born on February 9, 1969, in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. A graduate of the military-technical tank school and later of the Faculty of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University.
Career. In 2002, he began working as a journalist for the state news agency Ukrinform. Roman Suchenko has been with the agency for 14 years, six of which as their own correspondent in France. In 2010, he moved to France as an accredited correspondent of Ukrinform to report from there.

Arrest in Russia. On September 30, 2016, Roman Suchenko was arrested by the FSB in Moscow while visiting his cousin. The detention of Ukrainian journalist Roman Suchenko by the Russian FSB became known by chance - Russian human rights defenders discovered him during an inspection of the Lefortovo detention center in Moscow, where he introduced himself as a Ukrainian journalist. 'We stumbled upon 47-year-old Ukrainian citizen Roman Suchenko in the quarantine department of the Lefortovo prison cell completely by chance. He said he was a journalist and was accused of espionage. Suchenko could not inform us about the circumstances of his arrest and the charges against him,' said Zoya Svetova, a member of the Public Monitoring Commission of Moscow.
Suchenko's wife reported that he had gone to Moscow to visit relatives a few days prior and was supposed to fly back to Paris on October 2, but did not arrive at the agreed time. His phone was unreachable, and the relatives in Moscow hinted that he was having problems with the authorities.
The FSB confirmed the arrest of Suchenko on espionage charges and released a video of his arrest. FSB officials claimed that the arrested Ukrainian journalist Roman Suchenko allegedly worked for the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. On October 2, 2016, a Russian court ordered the journalist's detention for two months. On October 7, 2016, he was charged with espionage. The Ukrainian Security Service denied any connection of Suchenko to the institution.
On April 26, 2017, the unlawfully detained Ukrainian journalist Roman Suchenko in the Russian Federation on trumped-up espionage charges was held in custody until the end of June.
On June 4, 2018, the Moscow City Court imposed a sentence against the imprisoned Roman Suchenko in the capital - 12 years in a strict regime. On September 2, 2018, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation rejected the appeal against the June 4 verdict in the 'espionage' case.
On September 7, 2019, he was returned as part of an exchange between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
On October 25, 2020, he was elected as a deputy of the Chernihiv Regional Council for the European Solidarity Party in local council elections.
Family. Married. Has a daughter Julia and a son Maxim. The family lives in France.
