Thorbjørn Jagland - Norwegian politician. Prime Minister of Norway from 1996 to 1997, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway from 2000 to 2001. Secretary General of the Council of Europe from 2009 to 2019.

Place of Birth. Education. Born in Drammen, Norway. He graduated from the University of Oslo with a degree in economics.

Career. From 1992 to 2002, he was the chairman of the Norwegian Labour Party.

From October 25, 1996, to October 17, 1997, he was the Prime Minister of Norway.

From March 17, 2000, to October 19, 2001, he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway in the cabinet of Jens Stoltenberg.

From 2005 to 2009, he was a member of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) and also its chairman.

Since 2009, Thorbjørn Jagland has held the position of Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. On March 3, 2015, he was dismissed from his post after a meeting of the committee members. According to Norwegian media, his contradictory actions in awarding the Peace Prize to Barack Obama, the European Union, and Liu Xiaobo may have been the reason for his resignation.

He actively advocates for Norway's accession to the European Union.

From October 1, 2009, to September 18, 2019, he was the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

On June 24, 2014, Thorbjørn Jagland was re-elected for a second term by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In the first round of voting, he received 156 votes (absolute majority) from the parliamentarians, while another candidate, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (Germany), received 93 votes, out of a total of 249 members.

On September 18, 2019, Thorbjørn Jagland was succeeded as Secretary General of the Council of Europe by Maria Pejčinović-Burić.

Awards. Thorbjørn Jagland holds a degree in economics, which he earned in 1975 from the University of Oslo. In the last 20 years, Jagland has published numerous articles on various topics, particularly in the field of European and international relations. In the last 20 years, four of his books have been published in Norway: 'My European Dream' (1990), 'Letters' (1995), 'Our Vulnerable World' (2001), and 'Ten Theses on the EU and Norway' (2003).
